Hypocrisy, exit stage LEFT.

For years conservative Christians have heard that it is wrong to mix politics and religion. There wasn't much mixing going on, really. I know, I used to mix these subjects for a living. Liberals get bent out of shape when a conservative Christian endorses a Republican. "That's 'against' the constitution", they say. Well, it's not. The constitution only guarantees that there is no state religion- you are free to pick and choose your own. Other laws govern what a minister can do, politically. We must remember that they are only people- they have a right to opinions. They also have the same rights to discuss politics as you do. What this boils down to is ministers and priests can not endorse a candidate in the name of their church. That's it. They are free to endorse whomever they wish. They can also support whatever public policies that they wish. As long as they are doing so for themselves.

So, the sleazy tactics of the Kennedy family this weekend were legal. They can trot out as many grandchildren as they like during mass to pray for socialized medicine. The kid is saying a prayer for a (bad) public policy. Perfectly legal. And completely sleazy.

Here's where the hypocrisy comes in. You see, the left loves to point out separation of church and state- even where such laws do not exist. If we follow the Democrats lead, such distinctions need only apply only to Republicans. Rev. Jeremiah Wright had gained a prominent position on the Obama Campaign, before he shot off his mouth. Such advisors in the Bush White House were always cast in a suspicious light by the press. Maybe it was because Bush's advisors actually liked the Unites States.

The latest evidence. None other than Teddy Kennedy's funeral. The Kennedy's trotted out the grand children to pray for the public option.  This should surprise no one. Let me prequalify by stating I am a practicing Catholic. I love the Church, however, there is a problem in Massachusetts. Let's look at Teddy Kennedy's relationship with the church.

  • Chappaquiddick. Does this fall under Cannon Law for adultery, or murder? I'm not sure, but the only 2 people who knew for certain are now dead.
  • Divorce. The church will grant an annulment in extreme circumstances. God knows that being married to Teddy is an extreme circumstance, but there is no public record of an annulment. Most likely Teddy and Wifely number 2 were living in sin, per canon law.
  • Abortion. Teddy never met an abortion he didn’t like. Everyone knows the churches stance on abortion. Teddy was sadly non-compliant.

So, Cardinal O'Malley, the question that Catholics should be asking themselves is not whether or not Mass should be used as another place for the Democrats to push a socialist agenda. We should be asking how the hell Ted Kennedy got a Catholic funeral to begin with. Do you care to answer that for us?
